If your home service website isn’t showing up on Google, one of seven common problems is almost certainly the cause — and all of them are fixable.

This isn’t a mystery.

Google follows clear rules about which websites rank and which don’t.

Understanding those rules tells you exactly what to change.

This guide diagnoses each problem in plain language and gives you a specific action to fix it.

If you’d rather start with a broader look at your site’s overall health before diagnosing individual issues, here’s why a website audit is worth doing first.

How to Check If Your Site Is Indexed

Before diagnosing ranking problems, confirm your site is indexed at all.

Go to Google and type: ” site:yourwebsite.com “

If no results appear, Google hasn’t indexed your site yet — or it’s been excluded from indexing entirely.

That’s a separate, urgent problem.

If some pages appear but not others, read on.

Problem 1: No Local Keyword Targeting

The most common reason a home service website doesn’t rank is that it never mentions the city or region it serves.

A website that says “We provide expert plumbing services” without ever specifying a location won’t show up when someone searches “plumber in Raleigh.”

Google needs explicit location signals to match your business to local searches.

If your pages don’t include your city name, neighborhood names, or region, you’re invisible for every location-based search.

The Fix

Add your city and service area to:

  • Your homepage title tag (the text in the browser tab)
  • Your homepage’s first paragraph
  • Every service page title and heading
  • Your footer (address or “Serving [City] and surrounding areas”)
  • Your Google Business Profile service area settings

Rewrite generic phrases like “professional contractors in your area” to specific ones like “licensed electricians serving Charlotte, Concord, and Kannapolis, NC.”

For the fundamentals behind this, see our primer on local SEO — what you need to know.

Problem 2: Thin or Generic Service Pages

Google won’t rank a page it considers low-value.

A Services page with one paragraph listing everything you do — “We handle plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and more!” — is not a page Google considers worth showing users.

Each service you offer needs its own dedicated page with real, detailed content.

One page per service.

One page per major service area.

Thin pages are ranked last or not at all.

The Fix

Create individual pages for every service you offer.

Each page should:

  • Have a clear, keyword-focused title: “Water Heater Repair in Tampa, FL”
  • Include 400–700 words describing the service, what it costs, what the process looks like, and what customers should know
  • Answer common questions customers have about that service
  • Include a strong call to action with your phone number

If you currently have 5 pages on your website and serve 8 services across 6 cities, you need to build out roughly 48–50 pages.

That’s not unusual for a competitive home service market.

Writing pages that answer real customer questions matters more than stuffing in keywords — see our guide to optimizing for user intent for more on that shift.

Problem 3: Slow Mobile Load Speed

Google ranks the mobile version of your website — not the desktop version.

If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone, Google penalizes your rankings and users abandon the page before it even loads.

Page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor.

Beyond rankings, it affects conversions directly.

A 1-second delay in load time reduces conversions by roughly 20%, according to Google’s own research.

The Fix

Test your site at PageSpeed Insights (free).

The tool gives your site a score out of 100 and lists specific issues causing slowdowns.

For a deeper walkthrough of auditing this yourself, see our guide to auditing the speed of your website.

Common culprits:

  • Images that haven’t been compressed (use TinyPNG to reduce file size without quality loss)
  • Plugins or scripts loading that aren’t needed
  • A slow web hosting plan (cheap shared hosting is often the bottleneck)
  • No caching configured on your server

Many of these fixes require a developer.

If your mobile score is below 50, site speed is likely costing you real rankings.

Problem 4: No Google Business Profile — or a Poorly Set-Up One

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is separate from your website, but it’s what controls whether you show up in Google Maps and the “3-pack” of local results that appears at the top of most home service searches.

If you haven’t claimed and optimized your GBP, you’re invisible to the largest segment of local search.

Many contractors have a GBP that was auto-generated by Google but never claimed. Others have a claimed profile that’s 40% complete.

Both situations significantly limit your local visibility.

The Fix

Claim your profile at: business.google.com.

Then:

  • Set your primary category to your specific trade (e.g., “Plumber,” not “Contractor”)
  • Add your service area by city name
  • List every service individually
  • Upload 15+ photos
  • Write a business description with your city and primary service keywords
  • Start collecting reviews immediately — at least 5 per month

A complete, active GBP is the fastest path to appearing in the map pack.

Google has continued rolling GBP features into Maps and Search over time — here’s what’s changed if you haven’t checked your profile settings in a while.

Problem 5: Inconsistent or Missing Directory Listings (NAP Issues)

Google cross-references your business information across the web to verify that you’re a real, legitimate business.

If your name, address, and phone number (NAP) aren’t consistent across directories, Google loses confidence in your business and ranks you lower.

Common inconsistencies:

  • “Suite 200” on your website vs. “Ste. 200” on Yelp
  • An old phone number still listed on Angi
  • A former business name on the BBB
  • Your business missing entirely from major directories

This is called a citation problem, and it affects both map pack rankings and organic rankings.

The Fix

Audit your citations using a free tool like BrightLocal’s Citation Tracker or Moz Local.

These tools scan dozens of directories and show you exactly where your NAP is wrong or missing.

Fix the highest-authority directories first: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Angi, BBB, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and Facebook.

Then work down the list.

Aim to be listed correctly on 20–30+ directories.

Consistent citations function a lot like links pointing back to your business — for more on how these signals build authority, see why inbound and outbound links matter for SEO.

Problem 6: No Reviews (or Not Enough)

Online reviews are a direct ranking signal for Google Maps and a strong indirect signal for organic search.

A business with no reviews is ranked below competitors with dozens of positive reviews — period.

This affects not just rankings but conversion.

Even if a customer finds your site, seeing zero or few reviews compared to a competitor with 150 makes them click away.

The Fix

Build a review request system.

After every completed job:

  • Send a text to the customer within 24 hours
  • Include a direct link to your Google review form (get this from your GBP dashboard)
  • Keep the message short and genuine

A response rate of 20–30% is realistic.

If you complete 25 jobs per month and achieve a 25% conversion rate, that’s 6–7 new reviews per month.

Within six months, you’ll have a review count that makes a difference in rankings.

Never buy reviews.

Google’s detection has improved significantly and will suspend profiles caught with fake review patterns.

Problem 7: Duplicate Content Across Your Pages

Duplicate content confuses Google and causes it to rank none of your pages well.

This is especially common with home service websites that have multiple location pages using the same text with only the city name swapped.

If your “Phoenix plumbing” page and your “Scottsdale plumbing” page have identical content except for the city name, Google considers them duplicates and may rank neither.

The Fix

Every page on your website needs unique content.

For location pages, this means:

  • Writing a different opening paragraph for each city
  • Referencing local landmarks, neighborhoods, or specifics unique to that city
  • Including testimonials or projects from customers in that specific area
  • Potentially interviewing local team members who know the area

This is time-consuming, but it’s the only way to make location pages rank.

A shortcut here costs rankings across your entire site.

Properly marking up that unique content also helps Google understand it — see our primer on schema and structured data if that’s new territory for you.
