YouTube has been dubbed “the world’s second-largest search engine” by many in the Internet marketing industry, both because it is owned by Google and because it draws in billions of monthly visits. But, even though there is clearly a lot of marketing power within the video site, most small and medium-sized businesses don’t know how to take advantage.

The key, of course, is in producing clips that customers and prospects will notice and act upon. With that in mind, today I want to share the five strong traits of a successful YouTube marketing video…

#1 Good Lighting and Sound

Video clips with bad production values stick out like a sore thumb. And, the easiest way to make your video marketing feel more professional is by using the right lighting and sound. There are a lot of tutorials out there you can use to achieve great-looking results on a small budget. Just devote an hour or two to learning a few important tricks.

#2 Strong Editing

Assuming you’ve followed my advice and used good production for your video, the next step is to ensure that it is edited correctly. That will help you take out background noise, verbal pauses, awkward angles, and other small nuisances. The difference between a good video and a bad one is often in the way the raw footage has been edited, so get help with this task if you need it.

#3 The Right Titles and Keywords

Once your video clip is nearly ready to go, it’s time to add the right title, description, and keywords. These matter a lot, of course, because you want prospects and customers to be able to see your great work. That’s not going to be possible unless you choose the right categories and make your clips easy to find.

#4 A Great Call to Action

Every online marketing video should end with a strong call to action. Invite the viewer to visit your website, sign up for your newsletter, follow you on Facebook, or do something else. Not everyone will respond, but you’ll get a much higher response if you simply ask. Besides, without conversions your online video isn’t going to do much for your company.

#5 Comment Monitoring

When viewers comment on your video, or ask questions, you should respond as quickly as possible. For one thing, that helps generate further interest for your clips and adds searchable content to your videos page. At the same time, you could get some important feedback, or even a new sales lead. It only takes a moment to check up on your comments, so don’t miss an easy opportunity to interact with the customer.
